The Benefits of Adding Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey to Your Diet

Every morning I begin the day with a steaming cup of hot water with a shot of raw, organic apple cider vinegar mixed with raw honey. The recipe is simple: 2 teaspoons raw, organic apple cider vinegar, 2 teaspoons honey, and 8 oz warm water and you have just made yourself a wellness tonic that is considered the "fountain of youth" by many.

Apple cider vinegar is produced from the fermentation of pulverized apples and can be easily made at home or purchased. Apple cider vinegar has been highly regarded throughout history for having numerous health benefits. In 400 B.C. the great Hippocrates, Father of Medicine is known to have prescribed a tonic of apple cider vinegar and honey to his patients for its amazing health qualities. It was used on soldiers' wounds in the Civil War and WWII as an antiseptic.

Apple cider vinegar is rich in enzymes and potassium, helps support a healthy immune system, contains both anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, helps control weight, promotes digestion, regulates pH balance, may regulate blood sugar, may lower cholesterol, helps reduce sinus infections and sore throats, and acts as a detoxifier by removing sludge toxins from the body.

Like apple cider vinegar, honey has been used since ancient times both as a food and as a medicine. Apiculture, the practice of beekeeping to produce honey, dates back to at least 700 BC. Today, Dr. Oz refers to raw honey as "liquid gold". Be sure that you have raw, organic honey, not the cheap stuff off the supermarket shelves which could be mostly sugar water with added caramel color. Much of what is found in the supermarket labeled as "honey" is actually "fake" honey which is has been so processed and filtered it has lost most, if not all, of its medicinal properties. Raw honey is totally unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed. If possible, buy your raw organic honey local to your area which will provide you with even more health benefits. Think of raw honey as nature's own multivitamin. Honey contains vitamins such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and even antioxidant-rich vitamin C. It also contains minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, and phosphate.

These two ancient super foods combined together make a powerful modern day elixir that is affordable, easy to make and doesn't taste nearly as bad as you might think! If it is a taste that you can't acquire as a drink... just make a fabulous salad dressing using mixing apple cider vinegar and honey to taste.

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns please talk with your health care provider about whether apple cider vinegar is right for you. Vinegar is highly acidic, you should dilute it before you drink it. Straight up, the acidity of the vinegar has the potential to damage your tooth enamel and esophagus over time.
